Smith-Wyden Friendship Helped Wyden Get Elected.
(Sept. 24)
"To the surprise of many, Wyden and Smith quickly forged a close working relationship that helped burnish their reputations. That helped Wyden easily win a full six-year term in 1998, and now Smith may have a chance to be re- elected."

KUDOS TO FRED BARNES OF FOX NEWS' "THE BELTWAY BOYS" FOR awarding the 2006 "Turncoat of the Year Award" to Oregon's Senator Gordon Smith in honour of his December 7th Senate floor speech removing his support for the Iraq War. Award was given on Saturday's show, Dec. 29th.

Smith back in the days when he thought it seemed more popular to show support for the war. Now has two distinct awards; one from conservatives for "turncoat" and one from liberals (The Nation) for 2006 Progressive of the Year.

"But many of my colleagues said, 'Boy, you spoke for me.' " -- "Oregon's Democratic Gov. Theodore Kulongoski said he believed the suicide of Smith's son had a large effect on his thinking on many issues." [Well now, there's a good out to avoid criticism. Who's going to be mean enough to criticize him after a statement like that? And to think that it is Democrats who are being so broadminded as to make excuses for him. It just warms the heart, doesn't it. Perhaps there is a payoff to traveling on the campaign trail with Democrats instead of fellow Republicans after all. Which Republicans will still stand by Smith? Most likely the Oregon Right to Life (ORTL) & Tim Nashif of the OR Family Council (OFC) who, as of the last ballot initiatives, were still putting Smith's picture and quotes on their flyers. After all they've already ignored his votes for abortion funding, hate-crimes legislation & prolific pro-homosexual legislation. Will ANYTHING sear their consciences about what Smith has done?]
