How much has Nashif's/OFC's relationship with Senator Smith compromised these two organizations and how has it affected their endorsements?
How has it affected the OFC endorsement of Saxton for governor instead of the candidate who is known for being the true Christian-conservative most like Ronald Reagan? |
|
Smith has never had to worry about protecting his backside from a slip while walking the centrist fence. Feeding conservatives misinformation the ORTL/OFC alliances have kept him safely propped up upon a securely balanced platform by holding up the right side. The pro-homosexual Log Cabin Republicans and same-sex civil rights groups have held up the left side. All Smith has had to do is let the liberal media keep calling him a conservative, while he acts like a Democrat, and let the cooperative single-issue groups, from each side, keep their people happy about him. |
The day Larson lands on Smith, the way he did Jason Atkinson, it will mean something if Smith still comes on the show. It was easy landing on the trusting Jason Atkinson. Smith, by the way, has yet to verbalize a credible stand on illegal immigration. His voting record stinks. We already know that homosexual/lesbian immigrants will get his attention however, as evidenced by his proposed immigration legislation for same-sexers.
Hardnosed words, by Larson, out of earshot from Smith are little more than spit in the wind; dried in no time and invisible. |
| If each criticism of the ORTL/OFC is taken by itself one might debate how bad their actions have been. But, it is undeniable that accumulatively the evidence is clear that these two organizations have perpetuated the exact opposite of people's expectations.

Well now, that's what we need; weak-kneed Christian conservative leaders who contradict the principles and information in their very own voter guides. What a fine example of standing up for the Lord's principles. The Oregon Conservative
"That decision rankled many religious conservatives. Atkinson has been a consistent anti-abortion vote in the Legislature, and his father, Perry Atkinson, is a prominent Christian broadcaster in Medford.
The elder Atkinson said he was 'hurt to the bone by the Right to Life endorsement decision and charged that the group had abandoned its principles. 'When you've chosen one over the other,' he said, 'you've aborted the other candidate.'" |

Oregon's Christian Conservatives Set Up and Sold Out.
Part III
News and commentary
The Oregon Family Council (OFC) Arm of Senator Smith, Guarantor of a liberal legacy with the help of duped Christians.
(& provider of our next liberal 9th circuit court judge Milan D. Smith)
|
The Oregon Family Council -- (OFC) "Founders of the Defense of Marriage Coalition and Publishers of the Christian Voter's Guide" (So they describe themselves). Directors Tim Nashif and Mike White.
Like the Oregon Right to Life (ORTL) the Oregon Family Council (OFC) has hawked Senator Gordon Smith to Oregon Christian conservatives as a candidate and Senator who upholds their values on their behalf.
Also like the ORTL they have had a mutual admiration and fundraising relationship with Smith. Smith defers to them when it comes to responding to endorsement questionnaires and appearing on OFC issue fliers. The OFC, in turn, always endorses Smith irregardless of how contrary Smith votes are on abortion and same-sex issues.
These two organizations have had a major impact upon selling to Christians and conservatives the false impression that Senator Smith is a conservative despite his having voted for legislation funding abortion and his being the major sponsor of so-called "gay-rights" bills.
How much has this relationship with Senator Smith compromised these two organizations and how has it affected their endorsements? How has it affected the OFC endorsement of Saxton for governor? See:
** Smith Shakeup of ORGOP to Get Rid of Conservative Leadership (Atkinson)
and
** Smith Veiled Threat to Perry Atkinson to Hurt Son Jason's Career?
Smith hasn't merely voted contrary to Christian conservative values. He has "spearheaded" the efforts.
When Smith voted on CEDAW and for ending Reagan's Mexico City Policy he bucked the Bush administration and the entire Christian conservative pro-life community. He was a major force in resurrecting the battle to get rid of the Mexico City Policy. The Democrats depended upon him as they often do.
While the OFC and ORTL were espousing Smith as pro-life other organizations such as Focus on the Family, Concerned Women of America and Republicans for Life were sending out alerts to their constituents to urge Senator Smith to change his mind.
The same has been true on same-sex civil rights legislation. While the OFC was hawking Senator Smith and even going so far as to feature him on their "One-Man, One-Woman," "Defense of Marriage" (DOMA) initiative campaign fliers, other pro-family and Christian conservative organizations were sending alerts warning Christians of Smith's actions.
Conservative talk shows were discussing the far-left behavior of Smith, but the OFC continued to hawk him.
Here is only some of the legislation that has been ignored by the OFC, and about which they failed to inform their Oregon constituency.
Smith-Graham Gay Bill -- Introduce bipartisan bill to equalize tax benefits for health benefits for domestic partners. Same tax write-offs for domestic partners as married couples. --
Text of SB1702 Domestic Partnership Tax Bill
Smith Lead Republican pushing SB 1360.
The bill would add the following language to Section 106 of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986: COVERAGE PROVIDED FOR ELIGIBLE BENEFICIARIES OF EMPLOYEES — In the case of employer-provided coverage under an accident or health plan for an eligible beneficiary (other than a spouse or child) of an employee, such coverage shall be treated for purposes of this section in the same manner as such coverage for the spouse of an employee is treated.
Smith, Permanent Partners Immigration Act of 2003. H.R. 832/S.1510 would add the term "permanent partner" to the federal law's list of definitions of family, and cover same-sex partners of U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents.
It's already in England This is exactly what Smith wants in the U.S.
** -- Smith Tax Bills
**2 -- Smith was THE major force in getting sexual orientation hate crimes passed as a federal crime. (See paragraphs in blue at link)
Local Law Enforcement Act, S 1145 Another example of how Smith uses every issue to tack on homosexual rights legislation. He (along with Democrats) has held up some legislation from being passed unless such verbage is included in the bills. "The LLEEA was introduced in May of 2005 by Senator Edward Kennedy (D-MA) and Senator Gordon smith (R-OR). The Senate bill has 44 cosponsors and currently is attached to the Senate version of the Child Safety Act." EVEN PROTECTING OUR CHILDREN IS HELD HOSTAGE TO PRO-HOMOSEXUAL LEGISLATION . This bill has been held up for TWO YEARS because of this pro-transgender amendment being fought for by Smith.
Dr. James Dobson of Focus On the Family, Traditional Values Coalition, The Christian Coalition and the Concerned Women of America are only some of the organizations who were expressing concern and dismay over Smith's behavior on homosexual issue. But, the OFC, like the ORTL, wasn't urging Christians to contact Smith over his actions.
Did it bother the OFC members that Smith accused Dobson of "bearing false witness" against the Senator, from the floor of the Senate?
Dr. Dobson dared to reject the sometimes misleading distinction Smith and the OFC have persisted in maintaining; that protecting the word "marriage" is separate from the subject of civil unions or gay-civil rights. Thus it becomes unfair to brand Smith as contradictory when he, on one hand, claims to defend marriage and on the other is a champion of pro-same-sex legislation.
Handy dandy isn't it? There is more than one way to have it both ways and Smith knows them all. He's had all the help he needs from the OFC and the ORTL.
Dobson dared to judge Smith's probable future actions by his past legislative record. How unreasonable. Naughty, naughty.
Dobson's punishment? A slam from a 'high and mighty,' 'have it both ways' speech from the Senate floor. It was classical Smith.
Dobson just didn't get with the "take what you can get" program. That's not allowed even for the revered Dobson.
Spokesperson for the OFC, Georgine Rice told CNN, "Most people didn't see this as a referendum on gay and lesbian issues, they saw this as an issue of marriage and whether or not the definition that has served us very well is worth preserving." She referred to polls indicating Christians are split on the subject of civil unions.
Could it be that one reason for such poll results, is related to trusted Christian leaders, like those in the OFC, who have been quoted as treating the subject of civil unions as though they were a separate and safe alternative to "marriage"? Is this part of a necessary strategy of incrementalism (to eventually reach victory) or is it part of a set-up?
While winning a little at a time may sometimes seem wise, it begins to look suspicious when so-called Christian organizations uphold politicians who blatantly uphold values they claim to disdain in the name of "incremental victories."
Two faults of this strategy regarding "gay-rights" are that: 1) By the time Christians have exhausted their financial and emotional resources in the incremental battle over the "marriage" terminology there may be little left when the "civil unions" wars begin. 2) To make things worse they won't even be "on guard" against civil unions legislation because people have been misled into thinking they are a safe alternative.
Will the average person know enough to check into the wording of such legislation? Will they ever know unless millions more are begged for, and spent, in order to inform the public that the wording of such legislation guarantees that civil unions are legally no different than marriage?
Who does this forever incremental game benefit financially, win or lose? It certainly benefits Nashif as links listed in this article show. It certainly benefits some attorneys who are more than willing to see both sides of the same issue like the OFC's attorney who has no conflicts switching sides back and forth.
While Gayle Atteberry/ORTL and Tim Nashiff/OFC have held Smith up to the conservative right as their man, the pro-homosexual left and pro-abortion Republicans have held him up to the left-wingers.
But, according to the media the OFC hasn't done anything unreasonable. According to the (April 16, 2004 -- Steve Law) Statesman Journal, Republicans wanted a compromiser like Nashif. They wrote, "As national campaign financial reform brings a surge of political money to state and county party groups, Republicans wanted a pragmatist like Nashif in charge instead of some of the “wild-eyed radicals” who have been local-party leaders, said Jerry Keene, an openly gay Republican and precinct person in the Multnomah County GOP."
Wildeyed? Oh my, and who gets to determine what is wildeyed? Well, we know who Jerry Keene thinks who it should and shouldn't be. Apparently Nashif agrees with him.
So, just in case you didn't know folks, the OFC leaders are Log Cabin approved not to mention Gordon Smith approved. Feeling lucky? Want to continue donating your money? How slowly do you want to win this battle? (Assuming they were ever on your side at all).
THE MEDIA LOVES A RINO, ah, er a "Maverick," and "Independent."
Whenever a Republican's behavior is contrary to his party's conservative platform the media doesn't bother to use their editorial license to call them a Republican in name only (RINO) no matter how true it is. They prefer to refer to them as a conservative who "set himself apart" or "a conservative standing up for gay rights" thus giving the term "conservative" a new image. They aren't a RINO; they are just an "independent" or a "maverick." That is so much more charming!
This media gift is always extended to Senator Gordon Smith, just as it was to the OFC attorney Kelly Clark when he pushed pro-same-sex legislation.
EVEN "CONSERVATIVE" MEDIA HAS BEEN TOO KIND:
When Senator Smith is very, very kind he will be on the Lars Larson Show, but don't expect face-to-face interviews to be acutely tough on Smith. Here's about as tough as it gets when the subject of Smith's pro-same-sex votes was lightly touched upon:
Lars Larson: "You know I love you like a brother, but I have to disagree with you on this one". Smith then went on to remind everyone that he has always felt compelled to defend the civil rights of homosexuals. There's no guilt there.
If Smith, in return, feels the same brotherly love towards Larson he doesn't show it by making himself available to Larson's show when Larson wants to ask Smith questions regarding how he just voted in the Senate. Did Smith respond to Larson immediately following his CEDAW or ANWR votes? No!
However, Smith does go out of his way to express his "brotherly love" for his
"lesbian brothers and gay brothers."
(Smith's words, not Oregon Conservative's misprint).
If Larson's brotherly affections towards Smith are returned with such consistent rudeness is it safe to assume that Larson would never get another radio interview, from Smith again, if Larson were to be as tough on Smith as he's been on Kulongoski or Jason Atkinson? Hardnosed words, by Larson, out of earshot from Smith are little more than spit in the wind; dried in no time and invisible.
The day Larson lands on Smith, the way he did Jason Atkinson, it will mean something if Smith still comes on the show. It was easy landing on the young Jason Atkinson. Smith, by the way, has yet to verbalize a credible stand on illegal immigration. His voting record stinks. We already know that homosexual/lesbian immigrants will get his attention however, as evidenced by his proposed legislation (as mentioned above).
Political fatigue from working over the definition of "marriage" leaves little energy left to extend to "civil unions" battles particularly when those portrayed as "save-marriage" heroes, by bogus Christian conservative organizations, have misrepresented legislators as safe on these issues and who themselves have hinted that any title with "civil unions" is a safe alternative.
Is the OFC surprised that the very first civil unions legislation, in Oregon, established civil unions as being no different than marriage? After all, isn't all civil unions legislation still based upon demanding the same civil rights as married people on the basis of their same-sex activity?
As long as the premise for demanding any civil right is based upon "homosexual activity" it can't be factored out as "right" or "constitutional." As long as Christianity is based upon Scripture, Bible-believing Christians will know it is wrong and such legislation can only result in forcing a majority of Americans to support financially opposition to their constitutionally protected religious liberty of conscience. There is no way it comes up as constitutional to publicly fund benefits based upon acts considered the antithesis of the fundamentals of Judeo-Christianity. Our country was founded upon those Biblical beliefs.
It is disturbing that the OFC effort includes leading pastors in Oregon who have allowed the misperception that civil union legislation is permissible.
One Christian conservative leader asked if "The Oregon Conservative" thinks the OFC voter guides are still of value in spite of the fact they have hawked RINOs like Smith. He was surprised to get a "no" answer. The Oregon Conservative was surprised he still considered any OFC voter guide worth reading.
Why would anyone, once they know the voter guides lie, want to play Russian roulette between the truth and a lie? How many questionable candidates should the OFC and ORTL be allowed to hawk before their information is deemed useless?
Nashif and company don't take kindly to criticism. Nashif has been described as surly and they say he has used four-letter language on them. Those who have dared to hold him accountable for contradictory behavior have had a closed-minded reception. As one man described Nashif on his blog, "It was then that the private citizen was introduced to Mr. Nashiff's notorious temper. In a conversation that started amiably and moved quickly to a tirade, Mr. Nashiff used some very colorful language in castigating said citizen for having the gall to do a "hit piece" DURING the legislative session. It was in the words of Mr. Nashiff "OCA tactics," to do such things and that said citizen's political future was finished."
Nashif's hitching financial rides on candidates is getting harder. Some legislators prefer to avoid his help as a campaign consultant when once he was considered an asset. After all if Mr. Nashif can lay claim to being the reason one gets elected, he then has the power to obtain the opposite results. Yes? With this kind of help, who needs an enemy?
The Christian-petition game is proving more lucrative.
If each criticism of the ORTL/OFC is taken by itself one might debate how bad their actions have been. But, it is undeniable that accumulatively the evidence is clear that these two organizations have perpetuated the exact opposite of people's expectations.
The end result has been the allowing of a so-called Republican senator who not only has betrayed his constituency on the issues of abortion and same-sex issues, but has been a major factor in thwarting the Bush administration's effort to free the U.S. from being enslaved by enemies around the world for oil. It has enabled Smith to expand his liberal influence beyond what most of us will probably ever come to fully know.
Smith's influence could be felt in the future 9th Circuit Courts. His power has led to his brother, Milan Smith, being nominated by the President to a judgeship in spite of Milan's Smith's lack of qualifications. The nomination is supported by liberals such as Barbara Boxer. What was the tradeoff for this kind of support from Boxer in her own district when she, supposedly, could have had a "true liberal?"
It is a fair question to ask whether, when these two organization's betrayed their own (claimed) single-issue causes, they have also betrayed the entire country on other critical issues as well.
It is fair to ask if any of the claimed gains by the ORTL/OFC are worth the monumental damage that has come from their support of RINO candidates, candidates who have no integrity.
It is fair to ask how many more actions can they do before it is time to admit they simply aren't what they claim to be.
Has the OFC ever been what they claimed to be -- or did they just always belong to Senator Smith and the Log Cabin Republicans?

Senator Smith's brother will now add to the liberal chaos in the Ninth Circuit Courts. "PRESIDENT BUSH RECENTLY NOMINATED MILAN D. Smith Jr. to fill a longstanding vacancy on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. The Ninth Circuit, which covers nine western states, is a notorious bastion of liberal judicial lawlessness. So the White House should be looking to fill the vacancy with an outstanding jurist who is learned in questions of federal constitutional and statutory law and who is prepared to dedicate two decades or more to the arduous task of helping to transform that court. Unfortunately, Smith hardly fits the bill..." (Weekly Standard, March 27, 2006)
Smith Quotes, Hate Crimes Bill Passes.
Smith Homosexuals Praise, Co-Sponsor Hate Crimes Bill "Again, it's all true, but very heavy on the spin. First, the bill was co-sponsored by Republican Smith, who is mentioned only once in the two-page release. Second, it was not Ted Kennedy, but Smith whose impassioned speech on the Senate floor and op-ed in the Washington Post probably convinced the 13 Republicans to sign on. Speaking specifically about the inclusion of sexual orientation, Smith said, "There is a biblical example and a present duty to protect anyone in the public square who would be stoned by the sanctimonious or politically powerful." Third, "Republican majority" is misleading. It paints an image of a few noble Democrats winning a battle against a much larger throng of evil Republicans. But while the majority of Republicans opposed the measure, the Republican majority as a whole -- which consists of all 54 Republican Senators -- did not. Otherwise, the bill would not have passed at all. "
