""If we had been permitted to proceed with ANWR as we sought to when President Bush, the 41st President of the United States, was in office we'd have ANWR oil on line now."
Senator Ted Stevens of Alaska from the floor of the Senate 4-8-02.

"The Republicans don't have 60 votes to open up ANWR for drilling. I don't think there's going to be an energy bill this year. You know who that helps.? Saddam Hussein. His birthday is April 28th & he's gonna have a present."

"We've been working hard to try & find those places where there is strong support for energy going forward. And, actually, the state of Alaska is somewhat unique with its approach to ANWR, because they do strongly support the ANWR proposal in Alaska. So they want to see the energy development in their backyards." -- Gail Norton, Sec'y of the Interior, on Hannity & Colmes, 3-4-02.

The law...dictated by God Himself is, of course, superior in obligation to any other. It is binding over all the globe, in all countries, and at all times. No human laws are of any validity if contrary to this." --William Blackstone, 1765, Blackstone's "Commentaries." Limbaugh Comment on Senator Smith
prior to voting on campaign finance reform bill

Date:   February 22, 2002

The Caller:  Ezra

Subject of discussion:   How the Senate is about to vote on Campaign Finance Reform
Rush:   I really have no feel for what’s going to happen. I have no sense of it.

Ezra:  Exactly. And I was also talking to the screener about that how that maybe Bush knows there ARE 61 votes in the Senate to sustain a filibuster and hopefully he won’t even have to sign it to make that decision.

Rush:   Well that’s not -- see that’s not -- depending upon which story -- you talking about Gordon Smith?

Ezra:   Right.

Rush:   He’s, you gotta…there are two versions of that story. And Smith -- Ya see this is another aspect of that which bothers me. Gordon Smith says on the one hand that he’s probably going to vote and he WILL vote against the bill , but he’s not going to join the forces who are currently opposed to it if they start a filibuster because he’s thinks that there ought to be debate on it. So he’s not willing to join forces with his own people. He’s not willing to actually put his own belief into action to get the thing to eventuate to the way he says that he hopes it will.

Ezra:  Yes, I think its disgusting and there’s no reason he should be doing anything like that. Especially when Daschle’s not even going to let Bush’s proposals come to the floor for any debate whatsoever!

Rush:  Exactly right. Look it -- see this is why its tough making a prediction, but its really frustrating for me because what does he have to pop up for? What does he have to say a darn thing for? If he’s against it just be quiet and join the people who are going to risk everything and filibuster this thing.

Ezra:   Exactly, exactly.

Rush:  And bring it about, bring it about and give Dashcle a little of his own medicine at the same time. Because the worst thing about this, and I’m sure you understand it, the worst thing about this is not JUST what it does to the first amendment. Its that it will send the signal that it can be done again and again to other areas of the Constitution if people don’t beef about it, yelp, and squelch. I mean if the people aren’t going to object when their freedoms are taken away what’s to stop people from taking away more of them. So the precedent that will be set here is also troubling.
