  • With Tough Campaign Looming, GOP Base Closes Ranks Around Gordon Smith.   (Julia Silverman, Oregonian) ...there was open grumbling among the Republican true believers about his turncoat tendencies. [Julia's paying attention.] ...the fences appear to have been mended. [Don't bet on it Julia. Remember you were observing at the LIBERAL Republican event of the year.]

"But I will overlook a lot of things for the building of a strong economy," he [Jim Haynes, of Sherwood] said. "Gordon is a business guy." [Gordon's a business guy? Hmmm. One would never know it from his universal health care proposals and twinning up with Sen. Ron Wyden so regularly. Remember what he told Tommy Thompson, March 6th, in 2001 before the Senate Budget Committee hearing? "The predicate of the Oregon Health Plan is we're trying to get the full insurance & instead of offering a Cadillac to a few we're saying we can give you a Chevrolet for everyone & I really think that may be a way we can get closer to full insurance." THAT'S SOCIALISM Mr. Haynes. Socialism is the enemy of business and capitalism.

And how about his statement at another Senate hearing on immigration on May 12th, 1999?]
"Let’s not make fugitives out of farm workers and felons out of farmers..." [How many small businesses have been shut down because of illegal immigration Mr. Haynes? Know anything about California, Mr. Haynes? It's small business-hell in the border states.]

"What was there about the first four years that was worthy of defending?" he asked in an interview with The Associated Press. "It was a failure. Now, we've been more successful. Now, it's time to reposition our troops for a longer war on terror." [Well, well, well. Now that it is safe our Mr. Smith has reverted back to his former opinion of the Iraq War. Isn't it nice to know that we have a "fair weather" supporter of our military endeavors in our very own Republican Party? Is OR Conservative the only one who feels sick to her stomach at such blatant hypocritical insincerity?]

Julia goes on to say, "Throughout his political career, Smith has had to strike an uneasy balance between the demands and loyalties of his party affiliation and a moderate Oregon electorate." ["Uneasy? No. He made an art out of it from the beginning. It's the same old Pavlovian treatment of the voter. Throw each side of the political spectrum some random crumbs and they will push the lever more often. But, some voters have caught on to their being treated like that little laboratory rat. They won't be pushing the lever for Smith.]

Saturday's touched on both bases: "I believe water is for more than drinking, and trees are for more than hugging," he declared to applause, while vowing that under his watch, there would be "no logger left behind, no rancher left behind." [Anybody got any evidence that Mr. Smith has had any meaningful impact upon our restoring our timber industry and jobs? Take note Mr. Haynes since you expressed concerned about business.]

But he also made a plea for pragmatism, evident in the new slogan on buttons and T-shirts unveiled by his campaign: "Common ground for the common good," — though there was no mention of his Republican affiliation to be found. [Good observation M's Silverman. And does it bother anyone else that such "common ground for common good" includes illegal aliens? Did Mr. Smith brag about his voting record on immigration? Of course not.]

"Whether it is red or blue, left or right, urban or rural, taxes, health care, energy or the economy, you will find in all of those areas, I have found common ground for the common good," Smith said. [In other words he scientifically and judiciously doles out crumbs to little rats on both sides of the political spectrum and expects it to net another win. Seems like a sure-fired technique so far. Who cares if everyone knows he is a hypocrite? Win. Little rat, you DO want those crumbs don't you!? Isn't it better than nothing?]

A spokesman for the Democratic Party of Oregon dismissed the line, saying it proved that Smith "knows he has lost his grasp on Oregonians' support, so he has to start lashing out at his opponents. [So far Smith hasn't lost his grasp. He's simply lost his character (assuming he ever had any). Character is not why he runs for office.]

"He needs to get the swing vote," said John Winquist of Tigard, a longtime Republican who said he'd been to 30 Dorchester conferences and worked on former Sen. Bob Packwood's first Senate run. [Yup. Packwood Republicans; THEY are the ones who want the likes of Smith. Founder of Dorchester, Bob Packwood has detested conservatives all his life.]

"Republicans have lost before because of challenges from the far right. If we want to win statewide, we've got to have the big tent." [Said like a true liberal Packwood Republican. But, Republicans haven't lost because of conservatives. They lost because liberal Republicans like Packwood, in 1964, voted in droves for socialist Lyndon Johnson for the sole reason that they didn't want conservative leadership in the Republican Party. Their goal is to eradicate conservatives and be no difference from the Democrat Party. THAT is the dirty little secret of the Dorchester Conferences.]
  • Correction:   GOP-Gordon Smith Story on Dorchester.   Smith still does NOT support a troop surge in Iraq. (Oregonian) [So he's just the same turncoat he was. Feel better?]
  • Smith Urges OR Republicans to Get Behind His Re-Election Bid Even If They Object to Some Of His Recent Stands.   (Oregonian) [It's the same old "Ha, ha, where ya gonna go" liberal GOP routine. This time some conservatives will not vote for him and as far as where conservative voters can go; Smith has plainly indicated by his voting record that "they" can go to hell. They WON'T be voting for him ever again. Conservatives feel Mr. Smith can go back to his pea farm.]

"When facts have changed, so has my mind," said Smith, who angered some Republicans last year when he began criticizing the Iraq war after being a staunch supporter. "Some call this a weakness. I believe it's a strength." [Conservatives call it putting one's finger in the liberal wind and hypocrisy.]

The two most well-known Democrats vying to take on Smith said the senator wasn't being honest with voters. [That's what many conservatives say as well.] "On health care, the economy and Iraq, Gordon Smith has been in lock step with George Bush," said Matt Canter, spokesman for Jeff Merkley, the Oregon House speaker who is running in the primary. [If Smith had been in lockstep with George Bush conservatives would not be angry with him. Get a clue Mr. Canter."

"This is going to be a tough campaign," he said, adding that he's going to need the votes of every conservative he can get. "I've been there for you most of the time. Having been there for you, I ask you to be there for me." [Like heck he's been there for conservatives. He hasn't even been there for Republicans, less much conservatives. He will not get the vote of any real conservative.]
  • Julia Silverman, Oregonian:   Mannix, Erickson Stake Out Their Territory at GOP Gathering.   [Between the two candidates Mannix is the most Republican. This fact is further evidenced by the fact that our Mr. Haynes (above) sported a button for Mr. Erickson.] At Dorchester, both Erickson and Mannix supporters could be found roaming the Seaside Convention Center, the latter sporting buttons that read "Run, Kevin, Run!" It's Mannix, though, who seems to be getting most of endorsements from the party establishment, including popular elected officials...
  • Jeff Mapes, Oregonian:   Quotations from the Dorchester Conference.
  • Harry Esteve, Oregonian:   Did Rep. Walden Spill the Beans On Mannix's Political Plans?   "We have two dynamic candidates," Walden said, "Mike Erickson and Kevin Mannix." [But Mannix hasn't formally announced and didn't want this kind of publicity yet. So much for respecting the wishes of a pro-life Republican.]
  • Kulongoski Promoting Smith's, Wyden's Campaign to Expand More Wilderness Area.   (Oregonian) [Isn't it just so sweet how much Wyden and Smith so often work together?]
  • Grand Rone Tribal Council Member Seeks House Seat.  A Democrat, Wesley "Buddy" West of Sheridan hopes to become the first person from a federally recognized Oregon tribe to win a seat in the Oregon House. Three other candidates are competing for Dist. 23.
  • Prairie City, OR:   Walden Says Trying to Restore Federal Payments to Timber Counties Has Been "the Toughest Thing...   I have ever worked on. (East Oregonian) [They want their jobs back, Mr. Walden. Not gov't handouts for the rest of their lives.]

He said Congress did manage to push through a one-year extension of the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Act, effective for this budget year. [And just how much "self-determination" do loggers get from being made to take gov't handouts the rest of their lives instead of having jobs?]

Walden called for more active management of the federal forests, but he also acknowledged the difficulty in explaining healthy forest principles "to laymen." [Loggers aren't the laymen he is referring to.]

It should be easy to see that grazing, thinning and management can improve the forest and reduce fire hazards, he said. However, he said his colleagues from the urban East have large environmental constituencies who resist that message. Asked if a Hollywood movie approach would work, he quipped, "Well first you've got to find a conservative in Hollywood." [It wouldn't hurt to have a truly conservative OR legislator either. And the odd situation where the "experts" don't seem to be able to understand the obviously simple solutions to "laymen" one merely consider the obvious political bias from these so-called environmental experts.]
  • Oregonians Should Avoid Recalled California Sprouts.   Tests detected salmonella, which can be fatal. (Fox)
  • Jeff Mapes, Oregonian:   The OK Senator Who Has Held Up Smith/Wyden On Mt. Hood Wilderness Campaign.
  • Dave Hogan, Oregonian:   Ethics Commission Adopts New Gift Rules.
  • Pelosi Urges Probe Into Bush Aids' Refusals.   The subcommittee will be led by Rep. Lucille Roybal-Allard (D-Calif.), with Rep. Michael McCaul (Tex.) heading the Republican side. Reps. Steven R. Rothman (D-N.J.) and Greg Walden (R-Ore.) will participate.
  • Wyden Makes Promise to Search for Federal Land to Pantry Charity.   (Newport Times)
  • Ashbel S. Green, Oregonian:   Prisons Lock In Chunk Of Budget.   [Liberal hint, hint. You don't want to vote for the tougher-on-crime Mannix initiative, do you?]
  • Peter Wong, SJ:   Initiatives Could Boost Incarcerations In State.   [More hint, hint from another liberal journalist.]
  • Wyden Joins 24 Liberal Senators In Call for Policy Change with Cuba.   (Hawaii Reporter)
