- Settlement Nets Mayfield $2M. Islamic Portland man sued the U.S. over treatment in a bombing case. The government also agreed to destroy all materials seized from Mayfield's home and office. And it agreed to issue the 40-year-old lawyer another apology for FBI foulups that matched him to a fingerprint found in Madrid, leading to his investigation as a possible terrorist. (Oregonian)

Weyerhaeuser is fighting an $80 million award to Ross-Simmons stemming from a jury verdict that found the larger company had violated federal antitrust law. Ross-Simmons accused Weyerhaeuser of paying too much for alder logs and not using what it bought, with the goal of driving out competing sawmills.
- Importance of Foreign-Language Speaker In OR Grows, Claim Officials. Spanish remains the prevalent foreign language spoken in the state. Of the 217,614 who speak Spanish, however, fewer than half are fluent in English. [Shouldn't the headline have been, "Importance of foreigners' learning English grows"?]"We can no longer assume that knowing just one language will get us by in the work force," he said.
