- Newport: Association Rebuffs Gov's Proposal for Nominating Marine Conservation Reserves. "This is the velvet green glove of environmentalism, and what's in it is an iron fist," said Dan Varoujean from the Coos Soil and Water Conservation District board of directors. "You can hear it in the language (of the governor's proposal). It's an edict, not a true democratic process." Terminology used by the governor's office, opponents contend, is as telling as the forced timetable. The descriptor for reserves has morphed from "heritage" to "cultural," a seemingly subtle but critical nuance that plays to members of the public - a largely misinformed public, critics say - concerned about preserving ocean resources for future generations. The Martinez appointment was a bad move from the beginning, especially when his stance on illegal immigration is so against the general GOP membership view. It caused contention between Republicans at state levels that has left bad feelings. Results of this will affect future state elections. It was a divisive move by Bush. The illegal immigration issue is too important to many Republicans for Bush to have gotten away with this move.

- Oregonian's S. Renee Mitchell Thinks Employer Requirements On Domestic Violence Necessary To Protect Women. "Even bystanders can be silent victims. Imagine how the University of Washington co-workers of Rebecca Jane Griego are still affected from witnessing the 26-year-old's murder in 2006. Griego took every means she had to stay safe, including moving and filing a restraining order." [Did she have a gun and take lessons on how to use it?] "But she still died because her ex-boyfriend knew where Griego worked." [Mitchell neglects to mention the right for these women to bear arms in the workplace and on campuses.] Instead she focuses, approvingly, on Gov. K's signing of an "executive order that extends elements of Myers' workplace policy to all other state agencies. Among other things, managers will be required to post resources and information on bulletin boards, in break rooms and online by Feb. 1." [Such resources have already proven to FAIL these women. They failed "this" woman. Remember? Mitchell herself says she did all she could.] "And those employees who witness on-the-job threats will be expected to immediately report them." [This requirement MAY be good even though it is based upon an awful assumption that fellow employees would not already do this. One also could fairly wonder if employees could be wrongly accused when they simply didn't really think a real threat existed. When a woman KNOWS she is in danger she should be allowed to be armed everywhere she goes & should take gun classes on how to properly use it. The same goes for employers who truly want to be able to protect their employees to the fullest. Perhaps THEN it can be said that everything that could be done was done. ]
